A subject branching off from Here’s Why Archaeologists use Theosophy in Courses to teach about Pseudo-Archaeology, we briefly explore regards the over-looked Moon-gods in the Book of Dzyan mythology — curious statements, or beliefs made about the moon, evolution, and the origin of the subtle-body. The purpose of this piece is to put all that is basically been advanced by H.P.B. in her master-work, as not only a commentary on the proposed Secret Books of Lam-Rim and Dzyan, but theories taken seriously, and believed in by both her and her teachers. Whether Theosophists are knowledgeable of the fact, or not, the belief that the moon is inhabited is a high conspiratorial suspicion of Ufologist circles, researchers, and accused hoaxers. This is why Archaeologists and Anthropologists are fed up with Theosophy, and some are including it in their courses to teach students about Pseudo-Archaeology.
Tyler Glockner’s Secure Team is first to come to mind. Lets entertain the belief —
“The Moon is bigger than it should be, apparently older than it should be and much lighter in mass than it should be. It occupies an unlikely orbit and is so extraordinary that all existing explanations for its presence are fraught with difficulties and none of them could be considered remotely watertight.” (Irwin Shapiro of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics)
The Initiates and Confidentiality on the Mysteries of the Moon
K.H. and Morya claim the moon is inhabited, also stating that this subject involves terrestrial, and human evolution. In a footnote in The Secrecy of Initiates, Helena P. Blavatsky states, that several ancient men (Pythagoras, Socrates, Anaxagoras, &c.) believed the moon was inhabited. While, this is true, she states that it was a fact and penalty under death to reveal that “the moon was inhabited and that the lunar beings lived in profound, vast and dark valleys,” adding “our satellite being airless and without any atmosphere outside such profound valleys. (…)” (Helena P. Blavatsky, The Secrets of the Initiates, Collected Writings, Vol. 14., pg. 35-36 fn).
In the Mahatma Letters, the teacher of H.P.B., K.H. to Alfred P. Sinnett (A.P.S.) remarked, that there are unlawful forbidden topics that are confidential subjects only initiates could know. Of these confidential subjects therefore for the students of the school of these men, it was (or is) unlawful to speak, or publish any teachings about them.
H.P.B. further adds, that “the facts recorded in the secret annals of the Mysteries had to remain veiled under penalty of death” (ibid.). The adepts it is said, have never sanctioned or permitted any published speculations on these subjects, and they are reserved to uninitiated students.
The Secret Doctrine notes, that the subject is expressly forbidden, for “further details which may be added, though they border too closely on forbidden ground to be treated of fully. The last word of the mystery is divulged only to the adepts, but it may be stated that our satellite is only the gross body of its invisible principles.” (Helena P. Blavatsky, The Secret Doctrine, Vol. 1., pg. 179).
For a belief, so seemingly ridiculous, remember, that the Mahatma Papers were confidential, and were never meant to be published. Its publishing involved the belief that it would help in the case against Pseudo-Theosophists . . .
We can grasp the severity of the policy of secrecy on the moon, when the after-death process is discussed in relation to what is called, the eighth sphere — described as ‘a locality or state into which irredeemable personalities are drawn after death to be dissolved,’ but is although, a very rare occurrence. K.H. states that this is a region absolute nonentities enter, he adds — “failures of nature” to be remodelled entirely, “whose divine monad separated itself from the five principles during their life-time (…), and who have lived as soulless human beings…” Speaking of this eighth sphere, H.P.B. warns, “And now speaking of moons why, should you in pity sake, speak of forbidden things! Did I not tell you a hundred times that They allowed no one to know or speak of this eighth sphere, and how do you know it is the moon, as we all see it?” (The Letters of H.P Blavatsky to A.P. Sinnett, Letter No. 25, August 23, 1883)
K.H. on forbidden topics did not want certain ones discussed:
“Be more careful as to what you say upon forbidden topics. The “eighth sphere” mystery is a very confidential subject, and you are far from understanding even its general aspects. You were repeatedly warned and should not have mentioned it. You have unintentionally brought ridicule upon a solemn matter.” (The Mahatma Letters to A.P. Sinnett, Letter No. 83, London, October 8th, 1883. Italics added.)
In The Secret Doctrine, forbidden topics related to this subject are explained again:
“As to her [the moon’s] metaphysical and psychic nature it must remain an occult secret in this work, as it was in the volume on “Esoteric Buddhism,” notwithstanding the rather sanguine statement made therein on p. 113 (5th edition) that “there is not much mystery left now in the riddle of the eighth sphere.” These are topics, indeed, “on which the adepts are very reserved in their communications to uninitiated pupils,” and since they have, moreover, never sanctioned or permitted any published speculations upon them, the less said the better.” (The Secret Doctrine, Vol. 1, pg. 156)
The Secret Doctrine Theory
To in-fact not bring more ridicule on the topic, as if these are extremely strange and out of the norm topics, it is important to add David Reigle’s article on The Modes of Birth. The modes of birth are apart of the theory about the “lunar beings” and human evolution. In Western spiritual movements of the past several centuries, Alchemist concepts, like the subtle-body, which is not a foreign concept to European, Mediterranean, and Middle-East religious tradition, have been adopted. Yet, no one has ever explained with some scientific inquiry, ‘well, if man possesses a double-body, then how and from where it evolved?’ No one asks these questions. It is only in the theoretical explanations of the Occult Philosophy, do we find information on it; and further, we can find the general ideas in older literature.
“Of all the accounts given in the mysterious Book of Dzyan, none is stranger than the account in anthropogenesis of the modes of birth of the early humanities. The first humanity or root-race, ethereal and not yet physical, is referred to as the “boneless” and called the “shadows” (chhāyā). In this humanity, reproduction is described as taking place without parents. So with reference to their mode of birth, they are called the “self-born.” In the second humanity, somewhat more condensed but still amorphous, reproduction is pictorially described as “budding.” Using something familiar as a simile, these are called the “sweat-born.” In the first half of the third humanity, humans were becoming actually physical. What were the “drops of sweat” of the second humanity hardened on the outside and became like eggs. Thus this humanity is called the “egg-born.” Up to this point, reproduction was asexual. Now came the separation of the sexes into male and female. From the latter half of the third humanity up to the present fifth humanity, the mode of birth has been the only one known to us, the familiar “womb-born.” Such are the modes of birth taught in the secret Book of Dzyan.
When these stanzas from the Book of Dzyan were published in H. P. Blavatsky’s 1888 book, The Secret Doctrine, no one in the West had heard of anything like this. Not even in our mythologies did we have a story this unusual. It was appreciated by some as a factual account providing access to a fascinating new world, and it was appreciated by others as an imaginary account providing a delightful tale quite as entertaining as any fantasy novel. In both cases, Blavatsky is credited with bringing this out for the first time. But this is true only for most of the world. In India, these modes of birth are mentioned in the sacred writings of all three of its ancient religious traditions: Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism.
These modes of birth as found in Buddhism were earlier briefly described in my 1998 article, “The Secret Doctrine: Original Genesis and the Wisdom Tradition”. As there said (p. 6): “the Abhidharmakosa speaks of the four modes of birth, following the words of the Buddha, as the sweat-born, the egg-born, the womb-born, and the parentless, just as The Secret Doctrine does. But the detailed accounts of the earlier humanities in which these modes of birth took place, found in The Secret Doctrine, are absent in the now existing teachings of Buddhism.” (David Reigle, Modes of Birth. 2012, February 13. The modes of birth can also be found in Zoroastrian texts, as explained before.
The Secret Doctrine tells us, that the “moon” has a connection to the sidereal, mythology, and physical evolutions. Apparently, based on the school these chiefs were associated with, the secret literature and commentaries records and explains these mysteries in association with the moon, and its connection to evolution of life on earth. While, we will not spend time fully explaining the fascinating theory of this, we are only focusing on the fact, that the belief is admitted by Initiates themselves, whom we are supposed to regard as being sincere, and yet reluctant to give further details. The Secret Doctrine attempted to explain the “moon,” and its connection to the sidereal and physical world, according to Occultism, and the INITIATES. Even further, it involves what many people believe, but have not considered —
- The belief in the astral soul or “subtle body”;
- The evolution and origin of this astral soul or body.
The real Sun and real Moon are invisible, as the inner man is, The Secret Doctrine (Vol. 1, pg. 202). Planets are living organisms with inner principles, in coordination with the planes of matter. The moon, considered dead, is only “sleeping,” according to the occult theory. Humanity will be ever tending to reassume its primeval form, toward that of a conscious intelligent power, The Secret Doctrine adds: “a God and then — GOD, like every other atom in the Universe.”
This system exhibits a doctrine of evolution (or rather EMANATIONISM), and in its scheme, the evolution of man is not a process carried out on this planet alone, as A.P. Sinnett remarks in Esoteric Buddhism, but “a result to which many worlds in different conditions of material and spiritual development have contributed” (Esoteric Buddhism, pg. 29). The earth, is linked with the life and evolutionary processes of several other worlds, Sinnett adds; and thus, is one link in a great chain of worlds, intimately bound together by subtle currents and forces. Along these currents, the elements and life pass from world to world.
According to M., K.H., and A.P. Sinnett (their correspondent), mankind is not (nor could ever be) the direct creation of the unknown absolute, as to say — ‘an Architect does not build.’ An architect has architectural plans, blueprints, the germs of what-will-become, but contracts workmen to construct that model. Mankind is the product in Kosmos and Nature of a continuous process of evolution (e.g., There’s New Evidence for an Alternate Theory of the Origin of Life: How the Building Blocks of Life Helped Each Other), but other Intelligences were involved in this process.
If we adopt the stance of Theosophy, Richard Dawkins would still be in the correct position, rather than Ben Stein, who is trying to find vindication in his Biblical creationism. It should also be noted, that there is no such Mosaic God in the picture, in either Richard Dawkin’s, or Theosophy’s position.
“There was a “special creation” for man, and a “special creation” for the ape, which The Secret Doctrine asserts is the progeny of early human-types (not quite like us), “only on other lines than ever bargained for by Science.”
The sons of the Fire and the lunar gods are both called LHA (spirits) in the Book of Wisdom, but they are different classes of INTELLIGENCES involved in man’s evolution. The Secret Doctrine also explains, that our historically developed anthropomorphic conceptions have to be rid of, and that what the gods were to the “hoi polloi,” was not what the gods were believed to be by the Initiates.
“Learn what we, who descend from the Primordial Seven, we, who are born from the Primordial Flame, have learned from our Fathers” reads a rendering of The Book of Dzyan, Stanza IV. sloka 2.
The “Pitris,” “barhiṣads,” “lunar ancestors,” “lunar monads,” “lunar LHA,” “the GREAT CHOHANS,” “Lords of the Moon,” are all terms used in The Secret Doctrine, Commentaries, and in the Mahatma Letters. “The Secret Books of ‘Lam-rim’ and Dzyan” call them our Fathers, or Ancestors.
In the Commentaries, it is stated that physical evolution is represented by the boneless and soft-boned, the astral doubles (shadows) of the lunar ancestors; therefore, an astral evolution took place before physical evolution⁂.
Stanza III. Sloka 12 read, for example:
“The great chohans (Lords), called the Lords of the Moon, of the airy bodies (a). “Bring forth men, (they were told), men of your nature. Give them (i.e., the Jivas or Monads) their forms within. She (Mother Earth or Nature) will build coverings without (external bodies). (For) males-females will they be. Lords of the flame, also.”
They (the Moon-gods) it reads, are to create out of their nature, and the progeny would be “lords of the flame also,” i.e., possessing the spiritual and rational fire of the gods. Primeval man, the Stanzas say was Ethereal. Mankind was fashioned and aided, according to the secret doctrine by two distinct kinds (classes) of progenitors†, or ancestors. The first root-race, i.e., the ‘first types’ on earth were the progeny of “celestial beings,” or more clearly, the progeny of the lunar god’s astral selves (i.e., made in ‘their’ image). The first Race, their progeny (shadow image, or chāyā) was generated in a process referred to as a “primeval mode of sexless procreation,” “having oozed out, so to say, from the bodies of the Pitris” (moon gods).
H.P.B. claims, regarding limits of Darwinism and astral types:
⁂“Those purely secondary causes of differentiation, grouped under the head of sexual selection, natural selection, climate, isolation, etc., etc., mislead the Western Evolutionist and offer no real explanation whatever of the “whence” of the “ancestral types” which served as the starting point for physical development. The truth is that the differentiating “causes” known to modern science only come into operation after the physicalization of the primeval animal root-types out of the astral. Darwinism only meets Evolution at its midway point-that is to say when astral evolution has given place to the play of the ordinary physical forces with which our present senses acquaint us” (H.P. BLAVATSKY, THE SECRET DOCTRINE, VOL. 1. 1888. PG. 648.)
When life began, the world habitat, in this theory was not the same as is now, and life-forms took on large shapes and translucent nature. In this system, humanity never began as a pair of Male and Female, and never was other than a population of groups.
The secret doctrine is about the journey of the “spiritual Atom” (Aṇu), or MONAD. “Its (the atom’s) involution and evolution, its external and internal growth and development, have all one and the same object — man; man, as the highest physical and ultimate form on this earth; the MONAD, in its absolute totality and awakened condition…” (The Secret Doctrine, Vol. 1, pg. 183.), meaning a belief, that evolution is not blind. Evolution, for man is very gradually tending toward a spiritualized form, and the co-development of spiritual and mental intelligence.
It is mirrored in this old axiom:
“A stone becomes a plant;
A plant, a beast;
A beast, a man;
A man, a spirit;
And the spirit, a god.”
The Doctrine teaches that
“in order to become a divine, fully conscious god, — aye, even the highest — the Spiritual primeval INTELLIGENCES must pass through the human stage. And when we say human, this does not apply merely to our terrestrial humanity, but to the mortals that inhabit any world, i.e., to those Intelligences that have reached the appropriate equilibrium between matter and spirit. (…) Each Entity must have won for itself the right of becoming divine, through self-experience. Hegel, the great German thinker, must have known or sensed intuitionally this truth when saying, as he did, that the Unconscious evolved the Universe only “in the hope of attaining clear self-consciousness,” of becoming, in other words, MAN; for this is also the secret meaning of the usual Puranic phrase about Brahma being constantly “moved by the desire to create.” This explains also the hidden Kabalistic meaning of the saying: “The Breath becomes a stone; the stone, a plant; the plant, an animal; the animal, a man; the man, a spirit; and the spirit, a god.” (I, 106-7.)
Here is an account in a Mahatma Letter, concerning the Four Rounds of Seven postulated, that are left. We are, this system states, in the 5th Age of the 4th Round.
It is summed thus:
- First Round – The life-form was ethereal, non-intelligent but super-spiritual. Correspondingly, by the law of analogy, this is duplicated in the First Root Type of the Fourth Round. This life-form is sexless, and developed a monstrous figure.
- The first type was sexless and reproduced through fission. It developed the faculty of hearing. Its continent is called šdi-Var a, the Imperishable Sacred Land. The Imperishable Sacred Land is supposedly the ‘center of the North Pole’.
- Second Round – The life-form is still gigantic and ethereal, “growing firmer and more condensed in body, a more physical man. Yet still less intelligent than spiritual, for mind is a slower and more difficult evolution than is the physical frame.”
- They still have no physical bodies, but reproduced by budding, and developed the sense of touch. The later second race is also called the “Sweat-Born” (also a feature in both the Puranas and some Zoroastrian texts) because they reproduced by exuding vital fluid which coalesced into an egg-shaped ball, which served as an outside vehicle for a fetus and child.
- Third Round – “It has now a perfectly concrete or compacted body, at first the form of a giant-ape, and now more intelligent, or rather cunning, than spiritual. For, on the downward arc, he has now reached a point where his primordial spirituality is eclipsed and overshadowed by nascent mentality. In the last half of the Third Round the life-forms’ gigantic stature decreases, and its body improves in texture, and it becomes a more rational being, though still more an ape than a Deva”
- Had three stages: (1) the Sweat-Born, which it inherited from the second race; (2) androgynous humans, or “Egg-born;” and (3) the development of the two sexes and their separation.
- Fourth Round – ‘Intellect has an enormous development in this Round. The (hitherto) dumb races acquire speech as is known now; language is perfected and knowledge increases. At this half-way point of the Fourth Round, humanity passes the axial point of the minor great-cycle (…) the world teeming with the results of intellectual activity and spiritual decrease (…)‘
- They developed the fourth sense, that of taste, as well as the full development of the two eyes. This human-type also developed speech, which was not necessary during the earlier stages because communication was made through thought-transference. Language was first developed in monosyllables, followed by agglutinative languages, and then by inflectional language, which is the root of present Sanskrit. Then the fourth race became tall with pride. They mated with “the mindless, the narrow-headed” which bred monsters.
- Fifth Round – 5th Root Race. The fifth race developed the sense of smell. The Secret Doctrine states that the fifth root race has been in existence for about one million years. Often referred to as the Aryan race, it has its subraces. The Europeans are its fifth subrace, while the present Americans are the germs of the sixth subrace of the fifth root race. The seventh subrace will start its preparations in 25,000 years, after which there will be cataclysms that will destroy Europe and the whole fifth root race. The race will however overlap with the 6th root race for many hundreds of thousands of years more.
H.P. Blavatsky tried to prove through rationale, that this evolution is mirrored in the development of the fetus:
“What is the primitive shape of the future man? A grain, a corpuscle, say some physiologists; a molecule, an ovum of the ovum, say others. If it could be analysed—by the microscope or otherwise—of what ought we to expect to find it composed? Analogically, we should say, of a nucleus of inorganic matter, deposited from the circulation at the germinating point, and united with a deposit of organic matter. In other words, this infinitesimal nucleus of the future man is composed of the same elements as a stone—of the same elements as the Earth, which the man is destined to inhabit. Moses is cited by the Kabalists as authority for the remark that it required earth and water to make a living being, and thus it may be said that man first appears as a stone.
At the end of three or four weeks the ovum has assumed a plant-like appearance, one extremity having become spheroidal and the other tapering like a carrot. Upon dissection it is found to be composed, like an onion, of very delicate laminæ or coats, enclosing a liquid. The laminæ approach each other at the lower end, and the embryo hangs from the root of the umbilicus almost like the fruit from the bough. The stone has now become changed, by “metempsychosis,” into a plant. Then the embryonic creature begins to shoot out, from the inside outward, its limbs, and develops its features. The eyes are visible as two black dots; the ears, nose, and mouth form depressions, like the points of a pineapple, before they begin to project. The embryo develops into an animal-like fœtus—the shape of a tadpole—and, like an amphibious reptile, lives in water and develops from it. Its Monad has not yet become either human or immortal, for the Kabalists tells us that this only occurs at the “fourth hour.” One by one the fœtus assumes the characteristics of the human being, the first flutter of the immortal breath passes through its being; it moves; and the divine essence settles in the infant frame, which it will inhabit until the moment of physical death, when man becomes a spirit.” (H.P. Blavatsky, The Secret Doctrine, Vol. 2., pg 188.)
The Secret Doctrine explains, that the policy of secrecy protects humanity from the knowledge of still more deadly forces, yet unknown to science. The danger was that, a knowledge of the states means a knowledge of the planes, and its correspondences to the order, or structure of the universe, solar system, and man; hence, the knowledge of disastrous forces.
Since, The Secret Doctrine (Vol. 1, pg. 202) asserts, that the real nature of the Sun and Moon are invisible to us, the earth, the sun, and moon in their physical status as we see them on the physical plane is a mirage — a temporary state in a phase of evolution, apart of worlds inter-linked together; and those existing within other planes in which things form. Life is formed through these worlds, and does not form from nothing, or from a void.
Planets are living organisms with inner principles, as we have, in coordination with the planes of matter. The moon, considered dead, is “sleeping,” according to the occult theory. It was once inhabited, but its monads passed on to the “Earth Chain.” The monad in the theosophical view is believed to be the immortal part of man which reincarnates in the lower kingdoms of nature, and gradually progresses through them. The concept of Chains (or Planetary Chains) describe a process of evolution, which is associated with the lunar mystery.
Occultists throughout the centuries have connected the moon’s lunar phases with the growth of vegetable life, the cyclic change in forms of diseases, in human conception, to menstrual cycles, &c. The importance of the Moon is known in every ancient religion, and the celestial Selene has captured the imagination of people since antiquity. Although, on this plane of action, the Moon appears to be the satellite of the Earth, it is older and more developed than the Earth. The earth, the occultists say, is really the moon’s satellite. H.P.B. compared the Moon to a mother walking round and round the cradle of her child. Speaking of an alternate theory of the Moon, the mad queen—

THE LUNACY OF LUNA
William Q. Judge, contrary to Scientists, asserted that the Moon was inhabited, but died:
“Modern Theosophy (…) is not exempt from the mystery of the moon. (…) in a remote period, when there was no Earth, the Moon existed as an inhabited globe, died, and at once threw out into space all her energies leaving nothing but the physical vehicle. Those energies revolved and condensed that matter in space nearby and produced our Earth; the Moon, its parent, proceeding towards disintegration but compelled to revolve around her child, this Earth. (…) the “superstition” prevailing so long and widely as to the moon’s bad influence, as in insanity, in necromancy, and the like, is due to the fact that the moon, being a corpse intimately associated with earth, throws upon the latter, so very near to her, a stream of noxious emanations which, when availed of by wicked and knowing persons, may be used for man’s injury. Then the same writer goes on to assert that six mysterious doctrines or facts remain yet untold, and all relating to the moon.” (William Q. Judge. Moon’s Mystery and Fate, Path, June, 1894. Italics added)
† Creation Story in the Stanzas: The lunar deities are the ancestors of physical man. The lunar ancestors possessed the desire or passion to create, but were devoid of the element of Universal Divine Mind (Mahat), the principle, that is the synthesis of the deities that preside over the cosmo-psychic Energies, like the celestial (or noumenal) INTELLIGENCES (Dhyani-Chohans, or Arch-Angels). The solar deities are the “fashioners of the Inner Man.” The solar LHA evolved from the Primordial Fire, but are too near the absolute Essence in degree and grade. They made man complete, or self-conscious. The solar deities, in the Sanskrit, are called the Pitris, and in the Book of Dzyan, the LHA (Spirits). They are the “fashioners of the Inner Man.” In this self-conscious human Ego (Man) lies the power of intellectual self-conscious Egotism (in the spiritual sense of higher Mind activity), and because of the mind-principle of intelligence and consciousness, this makes mortals almost a god on Earth. The real Man, or true Individuality is strictly only considered to be the Divine Monad, linked with the Higher Mind (manas). Explaining it once again, the monads of the lunar beings do not possess the secret fire element of mind (intelligence and consciousness), because the fire is a manifestation of higher monads. “The fire or knowledge burns up all action on the plane of illusion,” says the commentary. “Therefore, those who have acquired it and are emancipated, are called ‘Fires.’—The Secret Doctrine, Vol. I, pg. 87.
‡ The transcendental Reality often appears as a personification of a “force behind phenomena” — an infinite, protean, and eternal Energy. This teaching, like Plato “rejects the Western theological dogma of a newly-created soul for every baby born.” The mortal is imperfect, and fashioned by both natural law and INTELLIGENCES (or Gods) of different origins, forms, grades, and abodes. “The millions upon millions of imperfect works found in Nature testify loudly that they are the products of finite, conditioned beings…”—H.P.B., The Zohar on Creation and the Elohim, pg., 217.
“Occultism sees in the effects “Elemental” (forces), and, in the direct causes producing them, intelligent divine workers and masons (builders). The intimate connection of those Elementals (guided by the unerring hand of the Rulers) — their correlation we might call it — with the elements of pure Matter, results in our terrestrial phenomena, such as light, heat, magnetism, etc., etc. Of course we shall never agree with the American Substantialists* who call every Force and Energy — whether Light, Heat, Electricity or Cohesion — an “Entity;” for this would be equivalent to calling the noise produced by the rolling of the wheels of a vehicle an Entity — thus confusing and identifying that “noise” with the driver outside, and the guiding Master Intelligence within the vehicle. But we certainly give that name to the “drivers” and to these guiding Intelligences — the ruling Dhyan Chohans, as shown. The “Elementals,” the Nature-Forces, are the acting, though invisible, or rather imperceptible, secondary Causes and in themselves the effects of primary Causes behind the Veil of all terrestrial phenomena. Electricity, light, heat, etc., have been aptly termed the “Ghost or Shadow of Matter in Motion,” i.e., supersensuous states of matter whose effects only we are able to cognize. To expand, then, the simile given above. The sensation of light is like the sound of the rolling wheels — a purely phenomenal effect, having no existence outside the observer; the proximate exciting cause of the sensation is comparable to the driver — a supersensuous state of matter in motion, a Nature-Force or Elemental.
