Every effort to help the West has failed and faced trials, each falling into the same patterns of individual and organizational turmoil, blame and mythologizing an adversary.
So, what is this effort that the modern Theosophical Movement represents to “the West”? It is important to challenge our notions of “the West” as I explained in the section Reframing the Pillars of Western Civilization in Challenging Christianity, American “Judeo-Christian” Frameworks and Religious Limitations.
We find this mission, approach, knowledge and habits of thought (fraternal affection for the whole of humanity, compassion, etc) in the ideas of third century Greek philosopher Ammonius Saccas and his disciples who started the eclectic Theosophical system. In this system, the Greek philosophies, Zoroastrian, Buddhist, Vedantic and Magian systems were taught as composing one harmonious melody. This melody is seen as the expression of esoteric wisdom once known in every ancient country having claims to civilization.
We find an older eclectic in the first century named Celsus who explained similarly that the archaic wisdom preceded by long ages the Christians and the Jews, and the Alexandrian philosophers. There were systems and methods to preserve this knowledge tracing back, it is claimed to early human history.
It is thus demonstrated that the preserved system and its principles are the forbear of modern science and transcends dogmatic cultism. The mission of theosophists is to make this history known, and to make known the history, content and developments of this system and its global reach in the ancient world. It has been preserved through the ages, despite the fact that Europe lost its Mysteries. The Christians claim it through the “Mysteries of Christ.”
What will it be? Christian Truth, or the eclectic Theosophical system? The two worlds of course can co-exist, especially within a secular system, that recognizes the principle of Fraternity.
We will strongly learn that Christian ‘Tradition’ cannot fully by itself express the whole of the system and science we speak of, and evidence will further show that it simply does not and cannot.
The Church could for example in one age or another be composed of the greatest Christian theologians ever to be born, and house the greatest library of knowledge, yet still be unable to express it. It could house and feed every sick woman, man or child in need in the world, and it would still not be that system itself.
Any priest, or nun or laymen can express the “Wisdom of God” in their sermon or teaching. However, Christianity cannot express the whole of the Wisdom Tradition, because it interprets everything through the lens of Christology (and Jesus Christ’s supremacy over Confucius, Siddhartha Gautama, Mahavira, etc as the “only Son of God”), and is bound to its special creeds, dogmas, particular affiliations and alliances.
Also, Christians ignore the other sides of this history and preservation of knowledge. The Vatican Library is not the only institution that preserves considerable library of knowledge considered important or sacred to humanity.
The teachers of Blavatsky, K.H., Morya and others were claimed to be initiates of the real Kalachakra (Tantra) system and belonged to an esoteric school in the trans-Himalayan regions presided over by the Panchen Lamas. How much of the efforts related to this school have been affected by the Chinese invasion and destruction of the country in the 1950s, we are uncertain of. Judging from letters, they exhibit a similar approach to Philosophy and Religion as Ammonius Saccas and his school, claiming the same ancient Wisdom-tradition alluded to by Celsus, and also refer to it as Theosophy.
H.P. Blavatsky asserts, that there existed in antiquity one knowledge and one language, which eventually became limited in knowledge to a few, and this knowledge was denied to subsequent generations. What is this “language?” The universal, esoteric tongue of the initiates is the language of symbolism and allegory?
As I explained in Kalachakra and Theosophy: The Sources of the Book of Dzyan and Kiu-te in The Secret Doctrine and Tantras:
After tracing the origins of the trinitarian dogma of the Christians through the Chaldean, Egyptian and Mithraic systems, H.P.B. theorizes about the roots of the Chaldean people in Southern Mesopotamia. The Chaldean people were part of a migration of other tribes, she says who lived in the earliest times of Babylonia. These early people instructed the Babylonians in their first notions of religion, but few traces remain of these people’s language, considered inventors of the cuneiform characters, or called Sumerians. These early tribes that instructed the Babylonians in the Mysteries taught them this sacerdotal Mystery-language.
It was further explained that Christians, mainly Protestant always talk about Babylonian religion to demonize “Magic” (or Occultism). The Babylonians learned the Mysteries from another tribe’s high initiates of Indo-Aryan origin. Traces of this sacerdotal Mystery-language exist, and it is known that the Jews do not possess this full system, but the Hindus never lost theirs.
With the Jews, the Mysteries become focused through a nationalized and tribal story of a people. All history and knowledge, even the genesis of Man is focused through the history of a people and separates it from other people and their history and systems in other regions of the world. This is a mark of human limitation, not the holy word of an all-knowledgeable God. Whatever mind is capable of peering into the invisible worlds, the seers’ vision is still limited to the brain and their own limitation in knowledge.
The brunt of the work, which we understand from the approaches and perspectives of the “eclectic Theosophical system” were developed and perceived by traceable and historical adepts, not by “God.” There is a case to be made with the sufficient surviving materials from antiquity we may all judge from. Our work is different from the academic, hence our mission, which find its expressions throughout time.
You must understand that this mission cannot die, and a great injustice has been done through the creation of more error, fluff and mythology. The public ought to be warned, so that some more learned individuals can make way for more genuine efforts of revival.
